Learning vs. Practice Activities
Introduction
In the conventional approach to teaching, teachers present content to the whole class and then provide students with independent practice activities. Ongoing research continues to support the need to differentiate instruction and engage students more actively in learning. As teachers move from the front of the room to take a more facilitative approach to teaching, they sometimes forfeit the whole-class lesson, but then only provide students with the same practice activities they used in the past. In this situation, the learning period is lost. Instead, teachers need to provide students with activities from which they will learn.
