The Role of Technology

When computer applications were first introduced to schools, the focus was on uses that would automate what students previously accomplished manually. It may be faster and easier to use a computer, however you could still accomplish the task without a computer. For example:

  • Drill-and-practice software
  • Computerized books
  • Word processing
  • Spreadsheets
  • Drawing programs
  • Concept-mapping software
  • Online encyclopedias
  • Slideshows
  • Web searches

Consider what is possible in the classroom because of technology that students could not do without technology. These are technology uses that are transformational:

  • Students use a simulation to fly a plane, journey to the bottom of the ocean, mix dangerous chemicals, become an entrepreneur, and more.
  • Screencasts allow students to access content anytime, anywhere. The teacher provides direct instruction and students are able to rewind, replay, pause, and more based on individual learning needs.
  • Non-linear, multimedia presentations allow students to explore content in ways that make sense to them, following links as desired, viewing content as a web of ideas and facts rather than a linear progression of slides.
  • Students can work with others in remote locations to develop a report using online, collaborative writing tools.
  • In hybrid learning environments, students can engage in group synthesis sessions after viewing benchmark lessons through videoconferencing and/or shared collaborative documents.

Not all technologies and applications can be categorized in and of themselves; it depends on how they are being used.

  • You can create a PowerPoint presentation that displays a set of slides in order as you speak. This is an automational use of that tool.
  • Alternatively, you can create a presentation that others can navigate, using hyperlinks to follow individual lines of questioning. You could also include video and audio clips to enhance the content where needed. This is transformational.

This is not to say that automational technology uses do not have a place in the classroom, but rather to encourage you to ensure that you are also making use of transformational technologies. Constantly push yourself to see the transformational uses of any technology.
